The writs were suppose to halt the activity of bogus schemes in stock issues and, hopefully, arrest the fall in South Seas Company stock prices, but South Sea stock continued to fall. This issue of The London Gazette was also noteworthy for marking the height of personal bankruptcies, which were listed at the end of the paper.

Whitehall, Aug. 10, 1720The Lords Justices having received a Memorial fr[om] the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners [Ma ] jesty's Treasury, and thereupon taking into Con[sideration] the great trade now carrying on in the Buyi[ng and Sel] ling of Stocks not Warranted by Law, which ... avoidably turn to the Destruction of Pub ... to the Ruine of Trade, and of many priv ... unadvisedly engage therein: Notwi[thstanding] ... jesty out of his tender Regard to the ... had, by Royal Proclamation of the ... given sufficient Warning of the seve ... be incurred by such Practices; which a ... nalties, and Punishments, whereunto Per ... victed for common and publick Nusances ... and of the Laws and Statutes of this Realm ... and liable; and moreover, such further Pains ... ties and Forteitures as were ordained and pr ... by the Statute of Provision and Premunir [?] made in 16th Year of King Richard II viz. Forfeiture of Land ... and Tenements, Goods and Chattels, and Imprison ment, and a Penalty of 500 l. for every Broker or Per son acting as a Broker (besides Inability and hicapaci- ty to act as a Broker (besides Inability and Incapaci- ty to act as a Broker for the future) one Moiety thereof to the Crown, and the other Moiety thereof to the In Former or Person suing for the same in any of his Ma jesty's Courts of Record, with full Costs of Suit.
