November 2011

Jean was the external examiner for the PhD thesis of Dr. Ahmed Zein (supervisor Prof. Paris Georghiou) at Memorial University in St. John’s on November 25th.

On November 10th, Jean served as the external examiner for the PhD thesis of Dr. Kristen Clary (supervisor Prof. Tom Back) at the University of Calgary. Jean delivered a seminar entitled "Consecutive Reactions Involving the Pauson-Khand Cyclization and Ruthenium-Mediated Metathesis."

October 2011

A paper on the ruthenium-mediated ring-rearrangement metathesis by Fuye Gao, Craig Stamp, Paul Thornton, Stan Cameron, Lauren Doyle, David Miller and Jean Burnell was accepted for publication in Chemical Communications.

A manuscript on Diels-Alder facial selectivity that includes experimental research from the 1990's and DFT computations made decades later was accepted for publication in the European Journal of Organic Chemistry. The authors are P.-Y. Liu and Y.-J. Wu, who are now at Bristol-Myers Squibb, C. C. Pye, who is now on faculty at St. Mary's University, Paul Thornton, Ray Poirier (Memorial University) and Jean Burnell.

September 2011

Owen Chauhan, Graham Dexter and Giselle Ardagh began Honours projects. They are examining different aspects of Nazarov reactions of allenyl vinyl ketones.

June 2011

Paul's paper on double-bond isomerization during Pauson-Khand cyclizations was accepted for publication in the European Journal of Organic Chemistry.

Jean gave an invited talk entitled "Development of Ring-forming Processes for the Synthesis of Natural Products" at the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) Conference in Montréal QC. Tim, François, and Jon presented posters, and Vanessa contributed a talk.

May 2011

Jean was honoured to receive Dalhousie Undergraduate Chemistry Society Teaching Award for 2011.

Vanessa successfully defended her PhD thesis on May 19th. Her external examiner was Professor Louis Barriault from the University of Ottawa. Congratulations, Vanessa!

Jon's manuscript on the E/Z ratios of the products of ruthenium-mediated cross metathesis was accepted for publication in Tetrahedron Letters.

Owen Chauhan and Lauren Doyle joined the group with NSERC Undergraduate Summer Research Awards.

March 2011

Jean presented a seminar with the title "Development of Cyclization Reactions for Organic Synthesis" at Acadia University on March 31st.

A full paper describing the effects of alkyl substitution on allenyl vinyl ketones during their Nazarov cyclizations, by Rhonda Stoddard, Gavin Heverly-Coulson and Vanessa, was accepted for publication in Chemistry - a European Journal.

February 2011

Paul Thornton's paper "Vinylogous Anionic Processes in the Formation and Interconversion of Tetracyclic Ring Systems" was accepted for publication in Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry.

January 2011

We were pleased to meet the Sepracor Lecturer for 2011, Prof. Alison J. Frontier from the University of Rochester. Many hours were spent discussing the intricacies of the Nazarov Reaction.

November 2010

Vanessa and François' paper on the interception of Nazarov reactions with nitrogen heterocycles was accepted for publication in Advanced Synthesis and Catalysis.
