Principle investigator:
Dr. Joseph P. Bielawski is an assistant professor cross-appointed in the Departments of Biology (75%) and Mathematics & Statistics (25%) at Dalhousie University (Halifax, NS). Dr. Bielawski did his PhD in Genetics at Texas A&M University, and did his posdoctoral training at the University College London under Dr. Ziheng Yang in the area of computational molecular evolution.
Post Doctoral researchers:
Dr Katherin A. Dunn is postdoctoral research fellow working in the group since 2003. Dr. Dunn has received Genome Canada and NSERC funding to work on comparative genomics of pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria. This yeas she begins working in the group as a research scientist funded by the Tula Foundation. She will continue to work on comparative prokaryotic genomics as well as begin working on statistical models of molecular evolution
Graduate students:
Melissa Morine joined the group in 2005 as a MSc student in Biology. Melissa is working on the functional topography prokaryotic metabolic networks and its relationship to genome evolution.
Caroline Urquhart joined the group in 2006 as a MSc student in Mathematics & Statistics. Caroline is working on new statistical methods for resolving the modular structure of complex biological networks.
Undergraduate students:
Joey Mingrone is an undergraduate researcher who joined group in 2006. He has previously completed an undergraduate degree in computer science and has now returned to University to pursue an undergraduate degree in Biology, with a minor in mathematics & Statistics. He has won NSERC USRASA fellowships for two consecutive years to support his work on cross-validation and likelihood displacement for selecting among different models of natural selection pressure.
Research Associates:
Peter Cordis was a systems administrator for our group from 2006 to 2007. He has now taken on additional duties, working as both a research associate and systems administrator, for several groups (including ours) at Dalhousie University working on topics related to evolutionary bioinformatics and comparative genomics.
