Halifax - Halifax triathlete Meagan Timney will make her international debut at the World Triathlon Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland slated for September 2 and 3.
Timney, 24, travels to Lausanne on August 30 to join 3500 triathletes from 50 countries.
"I'm really looking forward to competing at my first world championships," said Timney who is also a PhD student in English Literature at Dalhousie University. "I'm nervous and excited."
In August, Timney won the 25-29 age group at the Doctors Nova Scotia Provincial Triathlon Championships in Bridgetown.
Timney is taking part in the age group division of the swim-bike-run competition. She will swim 1.5 km in Lake Geneva, bike 40 km through the hills of Lausanne and run 10 km on a pancake-flat course.
"There are a number of challenging climbs on the bike course but I've trained hard and feel ready to attack them."
Timney combines a rigorous training schedule with the demands of being a doctoral student. On average she trains 15-20 hours per week. She says the dedication and determination required for graduate studies is identical to those needed to train and compete at a high level of sport.
"This is my first international competition so my goal is to get experience competing against the world's best and to come home with a smile on my face."
Timney is a member of Team Sugoi and is also sponsored by Cyclesmith Halifax and Rudy Project.
