Partners and Links

No research lab works in isolation, and we are fortunate to have both excellent colleagues and excellent funding support. This page includes information on our funding partners, especially student funding opportunities. We have also added links to associations important to our work.

Funding Agencies

NSERC Logo

NSERC holds annual (November 1) scholarship competitions for graduate support. They also hold annual awards for undergraduate summer research. We are currently funded through a Discovery Grant on "The effects of temperature and hydration on neuromuscular function."

SafetyNet Logo

SafetyNet, based out of Memorial University, is funded by the Canadian Alliance for Health Research to study occupational health and safety in coastal and offshore environments. It sponsors our work on cold and cognition, and also some of our hypothermia and offshore survival research.

NSHRF Logo

NSHRF is an excellent resource. They hold annual (May 1 deadline) scholarship competitions (M.Sc. and Ph.D.). We are currently funded with a development capacity grant to investigate the effects of hyperthermia on vigilance and spatial attention.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research Logo The Canadian Institutes of Health Research is the main biomedical funding agency in Canada. There are semi-annual (March 1 and Sept 1) competitions for research and graduate funding.

Canada Foundations for Innovation The Canada Foundation for Innovation generously helped to establish the infrastructure of the EEL, in combination with ACOA and Sable Offshore Energy Inc.

Other Partners

DRDC-Toronto Logo DRDC-Toronto (formerly DCIEM) was Stephen's doctoral lab. It is a world leader in environmental physiological research. Its facilities include environmental chambers, altitude chambers, dive chambers, and human centrifuges. Students are officially members of U. Toronto or York U.

Survival Systems Survival Systems is a company in nearby Dartmouth that is an international leader in offshore survival. The EEL and other faculty within the School work closely with Dr. Chris Brooks on numerous contracts and research projects geared towards improving survival training and safety equipment in the offshore environment.

Associations

Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology is the leading organization advancing exercise physiology and promoting physical activity in Canada. Resources include the Canadian Journal of Applied Physiology journal, physical activity guides and screening tools (PAR-Q). Note that the first year of student membership is FREE!

American College of Sports Medicine ACSM is the largest exercise physiology organization in the world. It publishes the prestigious journals Med Sci Sports Exerc. and Exerc. Sport Sci. Rev. The annual meeting is also the unofficial international annual thermophysiology conference.

Aerospace Medical Association The Aerospace Medical Association is the main organization promoting research in aerospace and other areas of environmental physiology. It publishes the journal Aviat Space Environ Med. Much of the membership includes military and other applied end-users of environmental physiological research.

Science Next Wave Science Next Wave is a career development site sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which publishes the very prestigious journal Science. It is the best resource on the web for career issues for graduate students and scientists.

Gatorade Sport Science Institute Funded by Gatorade but an excellent objective source for information on all issues related to sports nutrition. Membership is free and it is an excellent source of information (regular online publications include Sport Science Exchange and Sport Science Roundtable)

International Space University The International Space University is an AWESOME institution devoted to a multi-national and multi-disciplinary approach to space education, research, and development. Stephen is an alumni from 1994 and 1995, and it was easily the greatest academic experience of his life.
