Dalhousie Philosophy Graduate Students
Publication Support Group

About the PSG

PSG is organized by a group of philosophy graduate students at Dalhousie University who believe that philosophy is a collaborative enterprise and that a healthy and successful philosophical community is one that has as one of its central aims open and critical discussion. At our weekly meetings we discuss one graduate student's paper that he or she has distributed to the members beforehand. We begin with a discussion of general issues arising in the paper, then move on to examine specific issues in the body of the paper.

While the main aim of these meetings is to engage philosophically with one another on a particular topic, PSG serves several other purposes as well. First, the author benefits from focused and critical attention on a particular work, the result of which is, hopefully, a better understanding of the topic and an improved essay; the friendly context also serves as good practice for presenting papers at local and national conferences. Second, other participants are able to develop critical skills, learn what sorts of inquiry others in the department are pursuing, and by discussing issues outside their main research areas broaden their philosophical perspectives. (Thanks to Victor Kumar for this excellent description).

Please Note: The PSG Will Meet on Thursdays at 6:00 PM at various locations for the winter term of 2010.

Links to Information on Publishing for Students
At the bottom of the page I have placed links to useful information on writing, presenting and publishing philosophy papers. There are also calendars for philosophy conferences worldwide. I will update the links as often as possible, please let me know if any of the links are broken, or if you know of other links that would be useful.
