FUNDY SUMMER II

Churches and Birches: Old Acadia on Nova Scotia's Western Shore

"Acadia" needs it, too.

Blessing

.
The old French churches are well taken care of. And they are open all day.

Ship shape

.
It looks imposing, even on the screen. But that doesn't compare to seeing that muli-storied granite rock dominating its single-story rural setting.

A charming little church with lightning rod in - ah, well, somewhere on Route 1, I guess...

Lightning rod

.
The island across is part of Digby Neck. Pretty, isn't it? I wouldn't mind myself the view over St. Mary's Bay for a little rest...

.
St. Mary's church in Pointe de l'Eglise (Church Point). It is the highest wooden church in the world, it's tower rising to 56 meters (135 feet). The framing trees belong to the Université Sainte-Anne, Nova Scotia's French university (no kidding - and no accident, either).

St. Mary's Church

.
The crowing frame is genuine, not added on - but I do admit to changing the perspective to give the spire parallel lines.

Crown of thorns?

.
As far as the number of catholic churches and the prayers of catholic churchgoers are concerned, Holy Mary far outscores the Trinity.

In a storm, many a ship would be glad to have that old anchor. But now it's enjoying the view in Gilbert's Cove - much better than wallowing in Davy Jones's Locker sludge.

Retirement job

What are the ravages of time against the will of iron?

Retirement

.
Anchors are forever, right? Right!?!

These birches stand in Savary Park. Birches have something in common with churches, wouldn't you say? No, not just the white.

To see birches, one has to look at the sky. Besides, wasn't part of the Good Book written on birchbark? And didn't birchbark open up this beautiful continent? Does it not even make a great hair tonic, so the crown chakra is well covered and keeps running smoothly? Where would the spirit be without the birch?

The Birch Church

Even light trees stand on dark roots

Trinity

.
Ah, well, birches are only human, too.

The generation gap

It's just a photograph, ok? I am in enough trouble already. And, since you got the point, you are too...

Pantheon

.
One shot for my baby, one the road, and one for the camera, and then let's get out of here before the rest of the landscape starts shaking, too...
