Links to Websites for German (and other) poetry
and to German-English and English-German translations

I hope my translations do touch a nerve. So enjoy them - but, please, don't believe them to be the last word! There is rarely ever a last word. Translation is risky business, you know. And there are translators out there whom I admire for their superior work. How to find them on the Web, you ask?

Well, the Web is risky, too, and I hope the following URL's stay up for a long time. First and foremost, there is Brian Cole's large collection of all kinds of literary translation. (Note the homepage of Brindin Press, just in case.) Highly interesting is Tony Kline's free archive, Poetry in Translation.

Translations from English to German are much harder to find, but Helmut Schulze's enormous LitLinks website would likely be the first to consult.

Many poems that served as texts for Lieder (art songs) are found on Emily Ezust's The Lied and Art Song Texts Page, with close to 30,000 entries and 4,000 translations (all languages).

Not primary sites for translations, but very helpful as sources of poems are the labor-of-love collections of the Owl's Gedichtepool with its magnificent photographs, the site of Ernesto Handmann, of Inga Schnekenburger (with beautiful art work), and, last but not least, of Monika Spatz. Plus there is always the German Project Gutenberg for a good data base. And, when it comes to "Wienerlieder" (traditional Viennese songs), there is Mario Herger's large website (with links to mp3 downloads)! To all of them, plus those I happen to mention in the context of individual poems, I am sincerely indebted and grateful.

There are many others, of course, but the ones mentioned above should give you a good start on the Web, no matter where you are coming from and where you are going. Or where you want to go. After all, poetry is a path to pursue, not a result to reach. As is - of inner necessity, I suppose - life itself...
