The Heldenplatz tells (and has) a sundry history. Archduke Karl beat Napoleon near Vienna in 1809 (it didn't last). Prince Eugene of Savoy, the "Prinz Eugen" of a popular Austrian song, drove the Turks from the Balkans (and that one did last). Prince Eugene wasn't Austrian, but he built the best-looking palace in Vienna (the Belvedere, see later). Hitler once gave a speech at the Heldenplatz, after his troops invaded Austria. It was an invasion that Austria barely survived. The Viennese are just glad that he didn't get a monument there... |
