JESUIT CHURCH WITH CHOIR ST. AUGUSTIN

Music is played in many of Vienna's churches on sundays and church holidays (and the Austrians have lots of those). The best performances of the classic Viennese masses - Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and, much too rarely, Bruckner - are given in the Jesuitenkirche. Seldom is a tourist found there, and the Viennese come half an hour early to get a seat in front, where orchestra and choir sound best. (There is no charge, but a donation to the choir is suggested.)

The choir that sings reglarly in the Jesuit Church is called Chorvereinigung St. Augustin. Yes, once it sang in the St. Augustin Church. Then they got booted out of there because of their emphasis on music (as opposed to liturgy) - but they kept the name, and they kept on singing, and they kept their audience. Nowadays the Augustinerkirche has a new choir and orchestra, but you will find mainly tourists there. This is also very, very Viennese...
